To begin with, here is the official site:

Using Nintendo's free wi-fi service is no difficult task, but it can be confusing if you know little about computers. First, you'll need one of two things, don't waste your money on both, you only need one or the other. Your first option (A.) is a wireless router. Or you could opt to purchase one of Nintendo's first party (B.) USB adaptors.
Shown below, is coice (A.)...this is a standard wireless router, to use this you will need to buy an 802.11 b or g. Wireless routers require a ton of highly frustrating set-up, so this option may not be too user friendly.
Secondly, is the Nintendo USB adaptor. This can be seen below. Having not actually used one of these, I assume it's rather straight forward. I assume you simply insert it into the USB port on your PC, which can be found in either the front or rear and can range in numbers depending on the computer you own. I guess the USB adaptor would simply transmit the wireless signal once inserted.
Overall, the USB adaptor may be the easier and less time consuming method of playing online with your DS, but if you have plans of using other wireless devices in your home, it may be in your best interest to instal the router anyway.
Both items cost about the same, and both are probably about as reliable as each other, so it's really all just your prefference. On a side note, if you don't have a broadband connection, meaning DSL or cable, you may not be able to connect wirelessly, period.
