Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Players: 1 to 2
Genre: Action/Adventure
Developer: Konami
Platform: Nintendo DS
Gameplay
Konami continues its legacy of great 2-d Castlevania games and this one is no exception. This is the first Castlevania that is a direct sequel. It takes place one year after the events of Aria of Sorrow for the Game Boy Advance. When you pick up this game you will get used to the controls right away so that will not be a problem. Basically, you start out in front of a castle and you have to explore it. While exploring you willl discover secrets, unravel the mystery of the story, and become stronger as you progress. You start out with a knife but then you find many weapons such as, swords katanas, handguns, boomerangs, hand axes, and many more. Also these weapons can be upgraded, this adds a lot of strategy to the game. You can also collect the souls of your enemies. Almost every enemy has a soul so you will find yourself with an infinite amount of attacks. For example, if you kill a skeleton now you gain the ability to throw bones. With many different types of enemies the powers you gain can varyu from monster to monster. You can upgrade your weapons by combining your weapon with the souls you collect. For example, pretend you have a short sword and then you combine it with a poisonous snail soul and then you will create a stronger sword that can poison enemies as well. You can get stronger by leveling up, obtaining stronger weapons and armor and by collectin powerful souls.
Our hero Soma Cruz. Now 19 years old, he was the hero for Aria of Sorrow and he returns one year later for Dawn of Sorrow.
Graphics[/u]
The graphics are gorgeous and when you see them you will be impressed. The game start out with an anime style cutscene. They takes advantage of the DS capabilites and in turn they create beautiful 2-D graphics. The artwork for Castlevania has changed as well. Now they have an anime style which in my opinion, looks great.
This is the new art style which looks great.
The old art style which is also very impressive. (This is from Castlevania Aria of Sorrow for the Game Boy Advance.)
Sound[/u]
Castlevania has always been known for its great songs and this still holds true. They combine some old and new tunes and they all sound spectualar. Enemies and characters have their own unique voices and sounds. The only thing missing is voice acting but that is only a minor problem.
Replayability[/u]
It will be hard to put this game down because it is so much fun. You can try a new game with different weapons. If you start a new game, you can have all your items from your previous files. There are a ton of unlockables. Such as, a harder mode. Also you can unlock a new story mode that take the role of 3 different characters. There is also a versus mode for two players and a boss rush mode.
Overall[/u]
In my opinion, this is the best DS game so far. The replayability is great and I am sure many players will appreciate what this game has to offer. If you do not own this game, I highly recommend it because it is one of my favorite games of all time. With games like this, it proves that 2-D gaming is not dead and that it is here to stay.
